IPublish Help
Search
Searching allows you find publications of interest. Searches can be wide or very focused. Additionally searches can be saved as Reading Lists, whereby the search is saved, but not the search results which will change as more publications are published matching the saved criteria.
Search Elements
TERMS - These are words or phrases which you are searching. Omitting terms will find all content that match the search elements selected.
There are special symbols (modifiers) that you can add to search to make it more powerful. These modifiers are not required but can greatly focus your search results.
+ in front of a word (eg: +javascript) requires the word to be present.
- in front of a word (eg: -javascript) requires the word NOT be present.
"" around a phrase (eg: "dad jokes") requires the phrase to be present.
TIP: When focusing searches with modifiers, you will get the best results by limiting the other search elements to smaller sets.
Does not limit results to only Child Appropriate publications.
Limts results to only Child Appropriate Publications.
Toggles the view of other search elements available to refine your search
Brings up a dialog box to save your search as a new Reading List
PUBLICATION TYPES - Searches can be against any or all publication types. Every publication has only 1 publication type. Publication types describe the nature of the publication. For example, a Story is a fictitious work, while an Article would be a non-fiction work of research, analysis or expertise.
PUBLICATION COMPONENTS - Searches can be against any or all publication components. Every Publication has an Author, a Title, Keywords (if added by the Author) and its Contents. Limiting the publication components searched will provide more targeted search results.
Example Search
The above example will find all publications that are child appropriate stories which have unicorn either in the the title or in the main content of the publication.
Reading Lists
Reading lists allow you to save and organize your interests. There are 3 types of reading lists you can create.
Publication Lists - These lists allow you to add specific publications to a list. An example might be "Favorite Bedtime Stories".
Author Lists - These lists allow you to group authors in a list. An example might be "Favorite Poets" or "Favorite Comedians". The reading list will contain all publications by the authors in the list.
Search Lists - These lists save search criteria from a search. An example might be "Unicorn Stories" which would find all child appropriate stories that have unicorns.
Creating Reading Lists
buttons are used to create Reading Lists. These buttons are context aware. Clicking the button on the search window will allow you to create a new Search List from the search settings. Clicking the button in the Reading Now window will allow you to create a new Publications List or add the current Publication to an existing Publication List. Clicking the button in the Author actions popup will allow you to create a new Authors list or add the Author to an existing Authors List.
Managing Reading Lists
- This button toggles the Reading List window into management mode. When in management mode, this button will change to:
- In managagement mode, clicking on a Reading List will bring up a management dialog box for that list. You can rename the list, delete the list, or remove items from the list. The exception is Search Lists which can only be renamed or deleted.
Publishing
The Publishing window is where you manage your Publications. There are 3 main areas... Compose, Drafts and Published and are accessed by their name the top of the window.
Compose
This is the area where you create your Publications.
Publications are created as either 'For Children' or 'Not for Children'.
'For Children' publications are appropriate for readers 12yo and younger. 'For Children' publications cleary display the symbol for parents to easily identify the publication as child appropriate. When an account is set as a 'child proxy', only child appropriate publications will be displayed to that account. When you select 'For Children', the selector will change to . Attempting to publish illicit material as 'For Children' and lead to account restrictions, account terminations or even referral to Law Enforcement.
Publishing a work as 'Not for Children' allows for more mature content. However, if it is illegal in the real world, it is illegal here. Pornography/Nudity can not be published. Content calling for violence or harrassment is also not allowed. Lastly content intended to deceive the reader is also prohibited (not misinformation but rather disinformation).
There are 6 publication types you can choose from when publishing your work.
Article - Non-fiction works of research, analysis, expertise.
Story - Works of fiction such as short stories, novellas or novels.
Joke - Works of humor.
Poem - Works of poetry or song lyrics
Scribble - Short statements, announcements. Kinda like the really annoying sound a small bird makes. 😀
Review - These are reviews of tangible and intangible things. Product reviews, movie reviews, etc...
The publication will have 3 components to it. The Title, Keywords and the actual content being published.
Title - Yup, it's the title of your publication.
Keywords - These are words or phrases that narrow down the subject of your publication to make it easier for people to find. Keywords or phrases are separated by commas.
ex: bedtime story, princess, knight
Content - this is the body of your publication. You can edit directly in the content box and use the editing tool-bar floating towards the bottom of the screen.
When you are ready, you can save your work as a draft, publish it or discard the contents of the compose screen without saving changes.
Loads a fresh composition form without saving the contents of the loaded form. It does not delete any drafts or publications. It is useful when editing a draft or a publication and you don't want to save the changes or after you save a draft and want to start a new publication.
Saves the contents of the compose window as a draft. Once the draft has been saved, editing that draft will not create new drafts when Save as Draft is clicked. There are no hard limits on the number of drafts you can have saved.
Submits the work for publication. If the work had previously been saved as a draft, the draft is removed. Published works can be edited after publication, but can not be saved as drafts.
